Self Service Simplifies Application Migration to Windows 7

Berwyn, IL (PRWEB) November 12, 2010

Migrating applications to Windows 7 can be a time consuming and arduous process. Taking software inventory on all machines, synchronizing the old machine with the new one, and ensuring that end-users have the applications they want after migration are all tasks that are easily automated by SCCM Expert's Self Service and Microsoft's System Center Configuration Manager 2007.

Celanese, a global integrated producer of chemicals and advanced materials, recently started migration of 7000 desktops. Rob Foerster, Global Infrastructure Team Lead, Celanese commented "We did not have a mechanism to take inventory on all our 7000 desktops and then synch the applications on the old machine to the new one. This was turning out to be a 6 hour manual process, which we have automated with SCCM Expert's Self Service."

SCCM Expert's Self Service now has built in appSurvey and associated work flow. With appSurvey, IT administrators provide end-users a URL at which they can see a list of all software on their machine, how often they use it and what it costs. End-users can select software they want re-installed on their new machines. The appSurvey is then sent to an administrator for approval. The administrator reviews the survey and triggers migration with the push of a button or allows the users to start migration.

"We no longer need 3 resources onsite installing applications. We bring machines on the network and schedule migrations remotely through Self Service. Migration can be scheduled during off-work hours to reduce downtime. There is also cost saving resulting from the return of unused software licenses. People install expensive software and then do not use it once a project is over. These licenses are returned to a common pool during the appSurvey process," said Rob Foerster.

John Juris, SCCM Expert President, remarks "With such a dramatic push to Windows 7 in progress, companies have the opportunity to review their software usage patterns. By leveraging Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager software inventory and usage data, appSurvey will intelligently provide recommendations on what and what not to migrate based on administrator policies."

"SCCM Expert has a great approach to the migration of applications during Windows 7 deployments. The automated workflow, integrated with System Center Configuration Manager, helps enterprises get an understanding of their software usage and costs, and simplifies the migration process," said JD Marymee, Director Strategic Alliances, Management and Security Division, Microsoft Corporation. "Self Service migration of applications reduces IT effort, downtime and license cost while enabling enterprises to realize the ROI of Windows 7."
